January 20, 1990. Terror in Baku

Today, January 20th, the Azerbaijani’s commemorate one of the darkest days in the events associated with the break down of the Soviet-Union and their country’s independence.

During my years in the Caucasus, especially in Baku, I’ve heard many stories of the people that lived through those uncertain, violent and often murderous days of reckoning. For some, breaking the ties with Russia meant liberation; for others, the loss of their political link to Moscow and the wider Soviet empire also meant a loss of social and cultural interconnection, security and stability.

This is the original CNN report of January 20, 1990.
